The 6 Uganda eVisa Types

Uganda issues exactly six eVisa types. Find the right one for your trip - each entry shows who it is for, how long you can stay, and what to prepare first.

Uganda's eVisa system offers exactly six visa types: single-entry visas for tourism, family visits, medical treatment and conferences, a single-entry transit visa, and the multiple-entry East Africa Visa. Each single-entry type remains valid for 6 months from the date of approval with stays of up to 90 days, and the East Africa Visa allows multiple entries within its 90-day validity. Note that online visas do not authorize employment. Your issued document always controls what you can do and how long you can stay.

Uganda eVisa Requirements

These are the conditions and documents applicants must meet to get the electronic visa and enter Uganda legally.

Single-Entry Visa Documents

Tourism & family visits
  • Passport bio-data page copy with at least 6 months of validity
  • Tour plan / travel itinerary
  • Recent face photograph
  • Hotel booking or reservation (if any other accommodation, provide an address)

You may also be asked for additional papers depending on the travel purpose - for example, an invitation letter for business trips.

Multiple-Entry Visa Documents

Multiple Entry – East Africa Visa
  • Valid passport (for at least 6 months)
  • Recent face photograph
  • Valid police clearance from Interpol or your home country
  • Recommendation letter from a referee in Uganda
  • Cover letter stating the reasons for multiple entry
  • Any additional documents requested by the authorities

All attachments must be in English and must not be expired. Check all the documentation twice and upload it correctly to avoid issues during the visa application process.

Yellow fever update (2 October 2026): Uganda's immigration authority announced that a yellow fever vaccination certificate is no longer mandatory for entry into Uganda - it is not requested on the eVisa application portal. The World Health Organization still recommends vaccination for travelers from 9 months of age visiting risk areas, and some onward destinations ask for proof of vaccination from travelers arriving from Uganda, so carrying your yellow card remains sensible.

Validity, Stay & Rejection Reasons

Know the validity window and the most common reasons a Uganda eVisa application is denied before you submit.

Validity & Period of Stay

  • The single-entry visa to Uganda is valid for 180 days - the applicant should travel within 6 months of getting visa approval. The possible stay is up to 90 days.
  • The East Africa Visa is the multiple-entry option - it allows numerous entries between Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda within its 90-day validity, with first entry through the issuing country.
  • The East Africa Visa remains valid for 90 days of travel between Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda.
  • Online visas prohibit employment - paid work requires a separate permit.

Common Rejection Reasons

  • An expired passport - the most common reason. Check the validity and renew it before applying.
  • Form mistakes - review the details twice and correct anything wrong.
  • Missing documents - lacking required attachments may lead to denial.
  • Criminal records and previous visa violations, including overstays, may also cause a rejection.

How much does a Uganda eVisa cost?

For a single-entry Uganda eVisa you pay the government fee charged through the online system plus a service fee for expert checking. Visa fees are non-refundable.

Total estimated price $117.00
Other Uganda Visa Types Government Fee (USD)
Single entry - tourism, family visit, medical or conferenceUS$55
Single entry - transitUS$55

Multiple entry - 24 monthsUS$150

East Africa Tourist Visa (Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda - 90 days)US$108

Budget tip: if your trip combines Uganda with Kenya and Rwanda, the US$108 East Africa Tourist Visa usually beats paying separate entry fees for each country - and single-entry visas only cover one entry, so repeated trips need a multiple-entry visa instead. Uganda eVisa FAQs

Quick answers to the questions travellers ask most before they apply.

Do I need a Uganda eVisa?

You can confirm this by checking your nationality through our Uganda eVisa eligibility guide before you apply. Most travelers to Uganda must hold a visa before crossing the border.

Do I need an e-Visa to transit through Uganda?

A transit visa to Uganda is generally necessary for travelers who are not from visa-free regions and who pass through immigration during the stopover.

Can I apply for the Uganda e-Visa with a travel document?

No. It is not possible to obtain a Uganda e-Visa using a travel document. A valid regular (national) passport is required to apply for the electronic visa. If you are traveling with a travel document, you must apply for a traditional paper visa directly at a Ugandan embassy.

What is the difference between the Uganda Ordinary/Tourist Visa and the East Africa Visa?

The standard Uganda visa grants entry only into Uganda. The East Africa Visa allows multiple entries between Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda and remains valid for 90 days. Once you leave the territory of these three countries, the visa automatically becomes invalid, and your first entry must be through the country that issued the visa. Important: Kenya currently does not issue East Africa Visas and instead requires travelers to obtain a Kenyan ETA. If your trip begins in Kenya, you must obtain a Kenya ETA and a separate Uganda visa.

What documents are required for the Uganda eVisa?

The basic documents required for all Uganda e-Visa types include a valid passport, a recent passport-style photograph of the applicant, and a return flight ticket. For single-entry applications you also add a tour plan or travel itinerary and a hotel booking or accommodation address. If you are applying for the East Africa visa, you will also need to provide a travel itinerary. Depending on the purpose of your visit, for example medical treatment, attending a conference, business or transit, additional documents explaining the purpose of your trip may also be required.

How long is the Uganda e-Visa valid for?

All Uganda e-Visa types remain valid for 6 months from the date of approval, and the stay cannot exceed 90 days per visit. Uganda offers six visa types: single-entry tourism, family visit, medical treatment, conference and transit visas, plus the multiple-entry East Africa Visa, which allows multiple entries between Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda within its 90-day validity.

How long does it take to process a Uganda eVisa?

The Uganda e-Visa is usually processed within 5 working days from submitting the completed application form. The period may be longer due to the expert review and other factors such as the number of applications.

How will I receive my e-Visa after approval?

Once approved, your e-Visa will be sent directly to the email address provided in the application form. It is recommended to print it out and carry it with you.

How can I check the status of my application?

Log in to your VistoRoute account, or contact our support team and provide your application reference so we can check the progress for you.

My application status shows "Finished" - where is my e-Visa?

Once your application status shows Finished, the e-Visa is sent to your email address as a PDF attachment. Please check your inbox, and remember to check the SPAM or junk folder as well.

I submitted a Uganda e-Visa request on the government website. Can I apply again through VistoRoute?

Unfortunately, this is usually not possible. If you have already submitted an application using your passport details, the government system will block additional applications for the same visa type, because duplicate requests with the same passport number, document type and issuing country are not allowed. You should contact the Uganda Immigration Office or the nearest Ugandan embassy or consulate to check the status of your existing application, or request a cancellation of the pending application. Once you receive official confirmation that the request has been cancelled, you may submit a new application through our service.

Can I get a visa on arrival in Uganda?

Currently, no visas are issued on arrival in Uganda. Before embarking on their travel, foreigners need to secure either an electronic or a traditional visa.

What should I do if my e-Visa has been rejected?

If the Immigration Office has determined that you do not meet the requirements for the Ugandan e-Visa, you should contact the nearest embassy or consulate of Uganda to apply for a traditional visa.

How much does a Uganda eVisa cost?

The government fee is US$55 for a single-entry visa (tourism, family visit, medical treatment or conference) and for the transit visa, US$108 for the East Africa Tourist Visa, and US$100 for a multiple-entry visa granted for 6 to 12 months (US$150 for 24 months and US$200 for 36 months). A checked single-entry application totals US$117 including the US$62 service fee. Visa fees are non-refundable.

Is yellow fever vaccination required for the Uganda visa in 2026?

No. As of an official notice issued by Uganda's immigration authority on 2 October 2026, a yellow fever vaccination certificate is no longer a mandatory requirement for entry into Uganda and is not requested on the eVisa application portal. The World Health Organization still recommends vaccination for travelers from 9 months of age visiting risk areas, and some onward destinations require proof of vaccination from travelers arriving from Uganda, so carrying your yellow card remains sensible.

Do US citizens need a visa for Uganda?

Yes. Citizens of the United States need a Uganda eVisa obtained online before departure. The single-entry tourist visa covers stays of up to 90 days, has a US$55 government fee, and is usually processed within 5 working days. UK, Canadian, Australian and Indian passport holders follow the same process.

Can I extend my Uganda eVisa while in Uganda?

Extensions can be requested from Uganda's Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control - the stay granted at entry may be extended online or at the immigration offices. Apply for an extension before your current stay expires and do not overstay, as previous visa violations including overstays can cause future applications to be rejected. A single-entry visa cannot be used to re-enter after you leave Uganda.
