Japan eVisa Passport Validity Rules

Before beginning your application, inspect your travel document carefully. Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your trip and remain in good physical condition:

6-Month Minimum Validity Ensure your passport does not expire for at least six months from the planned date of your arrival in Japan. If your expiry date is approaching, renew your passport before applying to avoid application cancellation.

Available Blank Pages While the Japan eVisa is issued in electronic PDF format, your passport must contain at least 1 or 2 blank visa pages for entry endorsement stamps, transit ports, and border documentation.

Physical Condition & Cleanliness The identity page, photograph, printed alphanumeric numbers, and machine-readable lines must be undamaged. Passports with loose bindings, water stains, torn laminate, or smudged ink will be rejected by immigration desks.

Passport Type The eVisa system is designed for standard ordinary machine-readable passports. Diplomatic, official, or emergency travel documents may require consular filing routes.

Important Rule: If your passport expires, is lost, or has any detail modified after approval, your eVisa becomes automatically void. An approved eVisa cannot be transferred to a new passport under any circumstances.

Information That Must Match Character-by-Character

When completing the online questionnaire, enter every data string exactly as it appears on your passport bio-data page. Do not use nicknames or shorten middle names:

Do not hold documents with your fingers over text, avoid flash glare over the laminate, and do not submit low-resolution black-and-white copies.

The Zoom Test: Open your scan file on your screen at 100% zoom. If the text in the bottom two lines of the machine-readable zone is pixelated, blurry, or washed out by light reflection, re-scan the page before uploading.

Dual Citizenship & Multiple Passports

Single Passport Rule You must use the same passport number throughout the application, for flight reservations, and upon landing at border immigration in Japan.

No Cross-Document Mixing Do not mix passport numbers across your supporting flight tickets, hotel vouchers, or residential proof. All documents must belong to the traveling identity.

Passport Renewal Notice If you must renew your passport before traveling, wait for the new passport booklet to be issued and apply using the new passport details.
