Japan Passport Requirements for eVisa

Your passport is the core identification document used to authenticate your Japan eVisa application. Small discrepancies—such as an unreadable machine-readable zone (MRZ), name misspellings, or passport validity under six months—can cause immediate processing delays.

Japan eVisa Passport Validity Rules

Before beginning your application, inspect your travel document carefully. Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your trip and remain in good physical condition:

6-Month Minimum Validity

Ensure your passport does not expire for at least six months from the planned date of your arrival in Japan. If your expiry date is approaching, renew your passport before applying to avoid application cancellation.

Available Blank Pages

While the Japan eVisa is issued in electronic PDF format, your passport must contain at least 1 or 2 blank visa pages for entry endorsement stamps, transit ports, and border documentation.

Physical Condition & Cleanliness

The identity page, photograph, printed alphanumeric numbers, and machine-readable lines must be undamaged. Passports with loose bindings, water stains, torn laminate, or smudged ink will be rejected by immigration desks.

Passport Type

The eVisa system is designed for standard ordinary machine-readable passports. Diplomatic, official, or emergency travel documents may require consular filing routes.

Important Rule: If your passport expires, is lost, or has any detail modified after approval, your eVisa becomes automatically void. An approved eVisa cannot be transferred to a new passport under any circumstances.

Information That Must Match Character-by-Character

When completing the online questionnaire, enter every data string exactly as it appears on your passport bio-data page. Do not use nicknames or shorten middle names:

Form Fields Audited by Immigration

Full given names, middle names, and surname in exact passport order.
Date of birth (DD/MM/YYYY) and place of birth.
Nationality and passport issuing country code.
Passport booklet number (including letters and leading zeros).
Exact date of issuance and date of expiration.
Machine-Readable Zone (MRZ) two-line character string.

Avoidable Typographical Traps

Confusing the letter 'O' with the number '0' in the passport number.
Inverting day and month during date entry.
Omitting official middle names printed on the passport bio-data page.
Entering names with formatting characters not present in the MRZ.

Passport Scan Standards for Online Upload

Your passport bio-page scan is the foundational document inspected during consular review. Submitting a flawless, glare-free scan accelerates approval:

Scan the Entire Bio-Data Page

Ensure the photograph, personal particulars, signature, and bottom MRZ lines are fully captured without cropped corners or cut margins.

Avoid Flash Reflections & Blur

Do not hold documents with your fingers over text, avoid flash glare over the laminate, and do not submit low-resolution black-and-white copies.

The Zoom Test: Open your scan file on your screen at 100% zoom. If the text in the bottom two lines of the machine-readable zone is pixelated, blurry, or washed out by light reflection, re-scan the page before uploading.

Dual Citizenship & Multiple Passports

If you hold citizenship in more than one country, select the passport you plan to enter Japan with before starting your application:

Single Passport Rule

You must use the same passport number throughout the application, for flight reservations, and upon landing at border immigration in Japan.

No Cross-Document Mixing

Do not mix passport numbers across your supporting flight tickets, hotel vouchers, or residential proof. All documents must belong to the traveling identity.

Passport Renewal Notice

If you must renew your passport before traveling, wait for the new passport booklet to be issued and apply using the new passport details.

Frequently Asked Questions: Japan Passport Rules

Yes. Consular and airline check-in systems strictly enforce that your passport must not expire for at least six months from your planned date of entry into Japan. If it has less validity, you must renew your passport before applying.

A passport with water damage, tears, or an unreadable identity page or MRZ line will likely result in visa refusal or boarding denial. You should replace a damaged passport prior to filing your eVisa.

Your approved electronic visa is tied directly to the passport number submitted in the application. If you change your passport, the eVisa becomes invalid, and you must submit a new eVisa application with your new passport details.

Always upload a sharp, full-color digital scan or high-resolution photograph of the bio-data page. Black-and-white photocopies are not accepted by consular review systems.
