How Egypt's 6-month passport rule works
To apply for an Egypt eVisa- or to enter Egypt using a visa on arrival- your passport must be valid for at least six months from your intended date of arrival in Egypt. Both the online eVisa portal and airline check-in systems enforce this threshold strictly. If your passport expires in five months and three weeks on the day you land in Cairo, Hurghada, or Sharm El Sheikh, you can be refused boarding by your airline or denied entry at the border.
If you are applying for a 6-month multiple-entry eVisa, remember that your passport must still have at least 6 months of remaining validity on the date of each subsequent entry into Egypt. In practice, this means your passport should have roughly 11 to 12 months of validity left when you first apply if you plan to use the full six-month multiple-entry window.
Passport condition, blank pages and MRZ requirements
Beyond the expiration date, your physical passport booklet and uploaded bio-data scan must meet technical standards:

Same-passport matching: renewals and dual citizenship
An approved Egypt eVisa is tied to a single passport number and nationality. Follow these rules if you are renewing a passport or hold more than one nationality:
Renewing a Short-Validity Passport
If your current passport expires within 6 months of your trip, renew the passport before you apply for the eVisa. If you apply with an old passport and then renew it before flying, the old eVisa becomes invalid because your new passport will have a different passport number.
Dual Nationals & Second Passports
If you hold two passports, choose one eligible passport and use that exact same physical booklet for your eVisa application, your flight booking, airline check-in, and Egyptian border control. Never apply with one passport and present the other on arrival.
Emergency, diplomatic and non-standard travel documents
The Egypt eVisa portal is configured for ordinary national passports. Other categories of identity or travel documents follow separate diplomatic or consular rules:
- Emergency or temporary passports: Often issued with short validity (under 6 months) or without standard biometric features. Many airlines and border posts do not accept emergency passports for tourist eVisas-always check with an Egyptian consulate first.
- Refugee travel documents & stateless documents: Holders of 1951 Convention travel documents, alien's passports, or laissez-passer are not eligible for the online eVisa or visa on arrival and must apply in person at an Egyptian embassy.
- National ID card exceptions (Resort Charter Rules): While citizens of a few specific European countries (such as Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, and Portugal) have historically been permitted to enter under strict conditions using a national ID card plus two passport photos, the online eVisa portal requires a full passport. Using a 6-month valid passport avoids boarding complications.

What if I renew my passport after my Egypt eVisa is approved?
An Egypt eVisa is electronically linked to the specific passport number entered on your application. If you get a new passport before travelling, you must apply for a new eVisa with your new passport number.
How many blank passport pages do I need for Egypt?
You need at least one completely blank visa page for Egyptian border control stamps (or to affix the visa sticker if using the visa on arrival route). Endorsement and amendment pages cannot be used.
Can I use an emergency passport or refugee travel document for an Egypt eVisa?
The online eVisa portal is intended for ordinary national passports. Holders of emergency passports, laissez-passer, refugee travel documents, or diplomatic passports must confirm entry and visa requirements with an Egyptian embassy or consulate before booking.
