Who can apply for a Vietnam eVisa

The eVisa is an online visa for foreign nationals. As described by the Vietnam Immigration Department, you can apply if you meet these conditions:

You are outside Vietnam when you apply.
You hold a valid passport.
You are not subject to an entry suspension under Vietnamese immigration law.
Your nationality is eligible. The eVisa is open to citizens of most countries.
You are travelling for tourism, business or transit, and your stay will be 90 days or less.

Some categories of traveller, defined in Vietnamese immigration law, cannot use the eVisa and must apply through a sponsoring organisation instead.

When you may not need a visa at all

Citizens of some countries can enter Vietnam without a visa if their stay stays within the limit below. If you need to stay longer, you must apply for an eVisa before you travel.

Visa-free stay limits by nationality
Maximum visa-free stay Citizens of
90 days Chile, Panama
45 days Belarus, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom
30 days Cambodia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Singapore, Thailand
21 days Philippines
14 days Brunei

Exemptions and their time limits change, so confirm the current position for your passport before you decide. Citizens of a number of other countries are offered Visa on Arrival instead of the eVisa, with a shorter maximum stay. Check Vietnam Visa Requirements to see what applies to you.

Passport requirements

Your passport must be valid. The minimum remaining validity is: at least 6 months from the date of arrival in Vietnam.
The passport you apply with must be the one you will travel with.
Enter your name, date of birth, nationality and passport number exactly as printed in the passport.
Upload a clear image of the passport data page showing all four corners, with no glare or blur.

Personal and travel information you will be asked for

The exact fields appear on the application form, but you should have the following ready before you begin.

Information needed for a Vietnam eVisa application
Item What to prepare
Personal details Full name, date of birth, nationality and a working email address.
Passport details Passport number, issue date and expiry date.
Purpose of visit Tourism, business or transit, for a stay of 90 days or less.
Travel dates Planned date of entry and how long you expect to stay.
Entry gate The airport, land border or seaport you will enter through. It must be one of the designated international border gates, and you can enter Vietnam only through the one you select. See Vietnam eVisa entry ports.
Entry type Single entry or multiple entry.

Photograph and document requirements

Photo and image quality is one of the most common reasons for a request to correct or refuse an application.

Photograph and file requirements
Item Requirement
Portrait photo: appearance rules a recent photo taken within the last 6 months, in good quality, on a plain background, without glasses, with your eyes looking directly at the camera, and not the same image as your passport photo

Use a sharp photo with your full face visible, and do not apply filters or retouching to either the photo or the passport scan.

Application information checklist

Use this list before you start. Items in the first group are government requirements. The second group covers anything Vistoroute asks for as part of its own process.

Government requirements and Vistoroute process
Group Items
Government requirements Valid passport; passport data page image; portrait photo; personal and passport details; travel dates; entry gate and entry type; payment of the government fee.

Nationality-specific considerations

Indian citizens are not on the visa-exemption list above, so they need a visa for travel to Vietnam. The eVisa process and the government fee are the same as for other applicants. See our Vietnam eVisa fees guide for how the fee works for Indian passport holders.

Citizens of the exempt countries listed above should compare their planned stay with the 45-day limit. If you plan to stay longer, or your purpose of travel is not covered, you may still need a visa.

Common application mistakes

Common Vietnam eVisa application mistakes
Mistake Why it matters How to avoid it
Details that do not match the passport A mismatch can lead to a correction request or a refusal. Copy every detail from the passport data page.
Cropped or unclear passport image Unreadable information cannot be checked. Photograph the whole page in good light.
Choosing an entry gate you will not use You can enter Vietnam only through the entry port you selected. Confirm your route first and select the gate you will actually use.
Wrong travel dates Dates control the period your eVisa covers. Check dates against your booked travel before submitting.
Applying when no visa is needed The government fee is not refunded after a refusal. Check exemptions for your passport first.

Situations that can need extra attention

Information that does not match between the form and the passport image.
Images that are blurred, cropped or edited.
Incomplete or inconsistent answers on the form.
Eligibility questions, such as an entry suspension or a traveller category that must use a sponsor.
Previous immigration violations, such as overstaying a visa, deportation or unpaid fines.
A criminal record or being on a restricted entry list.

If an application is refused, the government fee is not refunded, according to the Vietnam Immigration Department. That is why checking details before you submit matters more than fixing them afterwards.
