Quick summary

Phu Quoc allows up to 30 days without a visa only if you arrive direct from abroad, stay on the island, and leave direct abroad. Any mainland visit needs an eVisa.

The 4 conditions

Fly or sail direct to Phu Quoc from outside Vietnam.
Stay on Phu Quoc island only.
Leave direct to another country from Phu Quoc.
Stay no more than 30 days.

Why still get an eVisa

An unexpected hospital trip to the mainland or a changed flight breaks the exemption. An eVisa costs the same as any other trip - see fees - and covers both island and mainland. Prepare via requirements and how to apply.

Frequently asked questions

Can anyone enter Phu Quoc without a visa?
Foreign visitors of any nationality can stay up to 30 days without a visa if they arrive directly from abroad, stay only on the island, and leave directly abroad.
Can I transit via Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City?
No, not for the exemption. A connection via another Vietnamese city means you enter mainland Vietnam, so you need an eVisa.
Can I visit the mainland from Phu Quoc?
No. The exemption ends if you leave the island. Get an eVisa first if you may leave Phu Quoc for any reason, including medical care.
How long can I stay?
Up to 30 days. Longer stays need an eVisa applied for before travel.
Is an eVisa safer even for Phu Quoc only?
Yes. The Embassy of India advisory of 6 April 2026 advises holding an appropriate visa even for Phu Quoc-only trips, in case you unexpectedly need the mainland.
What should Indian, US and UK travellers do?
The island rule is the same for all nationalities. Mainland Vietnam always needs a visa unless your nationality is visa-exempt. Check whether you need a visa first.
